Short Story - 1134 Words
I thought I was home in bed when I awoke to the sound of a phone ringing. Tucker could be heard whispering to the guy next to me to get some rest. ââ¬Å"Get the phone!â⬠I yelled. A moment later he picked it up. ââ¬Å"Receiving. Tucker here.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh, hi, good of you to call. Yes, heââ¬â¢s still here. You want to speak to him? Sure, hold on.â⬠Tucker nudged me in the arm to signal he was handing me the phone. ââ¬Å"Take a message and hold all my calls. I donââ¬â¢t want to talk with anyone right now,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"But itââ¬â¢s God and he wants to have a word with you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Tell him Iââ¬â¢m in a meeting right now, try back later.â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s the Father. He wants to talk to you.â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t believe this shit! I held out my hand and Tucker placed the phone in itâ⬠¦Hello!â⬠ââ¬Å"Hi, Buddy,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦One thing at a time. Are you ready?â⬠God spoke a few words in a language Iââ¬â¢d never heard before and then asked me, ââ¬Å"Howââ¬â¢s your head now?â⬠I felt around with my free hand. ââ¬Å"Well, it still hurtsâ⬠¦but, heyâ⬠¦the gash is gone. Howââ¬â¢d you do that?â⬠ââ¬Å"Ancient Chinese secret,â⬠he said with a laugh. ââ¬Å"But it still hurts,â⬠I complained, telling him that if he really was who he said he was, I wouldnââ¬â¢t be feeling any pain whatsoever. ââ¬Å"It does? Let me try something else.â⬠It sounded as if he pounded the handset of the phone against a hard surface a few times and then asked, ââ¬Å"Is that any better?â⬠I paused several seconds to be sure. ââ¬Å"I canââ¬â¢t believe it!â⬠I exclaimed. ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s no pain whatsoever, and itââ¬â¢s not numb, either. Youââ¬â¢re pretty good. What did you say your name was?â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s God, damn it,â⬠he said, cracking up. I had to stop and think. This could very well be God, but something isnââ¬â¢t right here, so I asked him, ââ¬Å"Have you been drinking?â⬠ââ¬Å"Of course!â⬠he said proudly. ââ¬Å"What else would you expect me to be doing?â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know. Looking after the world, perhaps?â⬠ââ¬Å"Actually, thereââ¬â¢s going to be a big party tonight,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"A bunch of the guys stopped by to help get things set up.
